Heading Towards a Great New Year!

I hope everyone had a safe, fun, and joyous Christmas! Our branch of the Fortney Family was gathered here in Stillwater for a few days to enjoy the Holidays and each others' company.

The last couple of days I've had some great success on writing the the e-novel. Two and a half pages one day and four yesterday! I'm beginning to get a better feel for who the characters are and how they will act. Hope to spend a few hours each day of this vacation pounding away at the keyboard adding to the storyline and the page count!

Sales have been down this month although there was a small uptick before Christmas. Actually had someone refund a book through Amazon. I get one of those every few months and it doesn't really bother me. If they don't like it, fine! I know what I write is not for everyone. I'm trying to entertain people while trying to get them to think a little about what's going on in this messed up world of ours. If someone's not up to it, c'est la vie. Far more people are!

The Terra-Bravo Saga:

Chaos on Terra-Prime
Chaos on Terra-Prime is set about a decade ago on an alternate Earth (Terra). There we meet Major Kent Morgan (U.S. Air Force) and Captain Cord Morgan (U.S. Army) who are trapped in South Korea when their version of the United States of America devolves into another civil war. The Morgans and other U.S. military personnel must escape a North Korean invasion into South Korea in order to return home. But home is not what it used to be.

Foothold on Terra-Prime
Several years later, the absence of the U.S. on the world stage has allowed a growing Global Islamic Caliphate to overrun much of Terra...and the U.S. is next. Military scientist discover number of alternate worlds in parallel universes, one of which is hospitable. Terra-Bravo is a world just coming out of its last ice age. Humans never colonized the North American Continent and have only a limited presence and civilization in Europe, Asia, and Africa. A crash program is created to send teams to Terra-Bravo to build a colony for a later influx of colonists. Brigadier General Kent Morgan and his brother, Colonel Cord Morgan, lead the teams to Terra-Bravo and battle time, the elements, and the local fauna to prepare a home for the colonists.

Crisis on Terra-Prime
After being cut off from Terra-Prime, the colonists continue to expand their foothold on Terra-Bravo. As the colony grows, a hidden plot is discovered. Sleeper agents have been with the colonists since the start and try to destroy the colony from within. Once again, Brigadier General Kent Morgan and Colonel Cord Morgan and their friends must fight to survive.

It's the Holiday Season!

Greetings and welcome to the start of the Christmas and New Years Holidays Season!!!

I pray this finds each and every one of you is well and happy. I know many people are down this time of year but this year, I feel especially up on many levels!

Initial image selection from the stuff shot at DFW is almost complete and I'm very happy with how it's going. There are a few small skill sheet sequences I'd like to shoot between now and Christmas/New Years break and things are falling into place to let that happen. Once I knock those out and get some other images plugged into chapter figure references, I'll have the first three chapters of images complete for Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting 6th edition.

Julie has just finished three very pretty quilts and they will be going to their homes shortly. Some folks have discovered her quilts and she's starting to get requests!

The new murder mystery in space story is moving along slowly but surely. I haven't quite got a feel for all of the characters yet but I'm getting there. I've a couple of chapters to write to finish setting the stage (so to speak) and then it's m-u-r-d-e-r time! Bwahaha! The first of several, I think.

Writer's Block!

Well, I'd hoped to have some real good news to report about the collection of science fiction stories I've been working on. Sadly, it isn't good news!

I've been suffering from a bad case of Writer's Block working on these...the first story in particular. Most of the stories for this collection have been ideas I've tinkered with over the years and kept putting aside. By making them short stories and combining them into a collection, I'd hoped to move forward with them. 

Nope! I just ain't feeling it!

It reminds me of my meeting with G. Harry Stine. He asked me which of his stories was my least favorite and I said "The Abode of Life", a Star Trek novel he wrote under his Lee Correy pseudonym. It was an okay story, but not great Lee Correy or great Star Trek...to which he readily agreed. Then he told me the story...of that story.

Back in the late 1950s, he'd come up with a story idea that he just couldn't get to work. He'd work on it for a time, then toss it up on the shelf for a few months before trying again. This went on for years! Then Bantam Books and Paramount offered him "an obscene amount of money" (his words) to write a Star Trek novel. So he signed the contract and sat down to write...nada! What to do? What to do? He leaned back in his chair and saw that old story up on the shelf. He pulled it down, "plugged in Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and the Enterprise" and danged if it didn't work! (Turned out to be his best seller AND Star Trek's best seller for a while!)

So...what to do?

For now, the older story ideas are "on the shelf" until later. I WILL work on one of the new ideas however...the murder mystery in space that Jimmie Badgett asked me to write. It's an intriguing challenge and I want to get it done for Jimmie. I've even come up with some interesting ideas in the last few days I want to try in it. More to follow!

November roared in like a lion with book sales then crept out like a scaredy cat. So, starting tomorrow night, I'm going to do extensive online advertising leading up to Christmas. E-books can be a wonderful Christmas gift and the major e-bookstores provide a means to gift e-books to others. 

So brace yourselves for an onslaught of Facebook and e-mail ads over the new few weeks for the Terra-Bravo Saga and the Arizona State Guard e-novels. Each of you has family and friends who are science fiction/adventure/action fans and now is the time to get them something new and exciting to read!

I'm Back!

Greetings!

Sorry I've been away for a few days and haven't blogged. I went on a trip to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport with two of my co-workers. While there, we worked with DFW Airport Fire Rescue personnel to shoot photos and videos for the new skill sheets to be in the 6th edition of IFSTA's Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting manual.

We were able to shoot the bulk of the skill sheets! My heartfelt thanks go to Captain Brian Canady and the personnel of DFW Airport Fire Rescue and to my co-workers, Leslie Miller and Nathan Chandler, for the hard work accomplished under adverse (extremely COLD) conditions. 

Next comes the work of shifting through the thousands of images to complete the skill sheets and the chapters of the manual. It'll take me a few weeks to accomplish this!

I'll resume work on the short story collection tomorrow night. I was just too tired after each day on the photo shoot to sit down and do any writing on it. I hope to have the first story's initial draft done by Friday (Nov. 21st) and then move on to the second story, which has already been written but needs some tweaking.

I'm hoping by Friday to be ready to roll out the Kickstarter campaign to raise money for new covers for the e-books and for some online/print advertising. Sorry it has been delayed but other things seemed more important at the time.

I received a pleasant surprise the other day. I was checking my messages on Facebook and found one from Mack Maloney, one of my favorite authors. Mr. Maloney is the author of the Wingman, Starhawk, and Chopper Ops series of action/adventure books. Awhile back, I wrote a Hubpage review of The Wingman series and he had found it on the Internet. He wanted to let me know that he had written some new Wingman stories and send me a coupon for an e-book version of one of them.

Greeting Family and Friends!

I hope this finds each of you hale and healthy. I'm doing great! Fully recovered from the roof project. Things like that were so much easier when I was SO much younger! Got the new e-novel e-published and it is selling well. 

Essentials 7th is going along well and Company Officer 5th went on sale TODAY!!! Hooray!!! I'm looking forward to the sales figures on THAT one in the weeks and months ahead.

My plan is to take a month off from writing at home (other than for advertising purposes). Okay...okay...I confess. I've started building notes on Arizona State Guard Book 2 AND came up with an idea for a ghostly war story. Not my usual genre.

I need to take some time to come up with a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to help Sean buy a new computer and programs to work on covers for me, pay him for those covers, and for some print and digital advertising. Need to come up with a kick-ass Kickstarter campaign name. Suggestions???

It's a Two-fer!!!

Well, accomplished two big events in the last few days. 

First, with the help of Sean and Kyle, we got the house's roof stripped and the roofers finished installing the new shingles late yesterday evening!!! It's been years in preparation, but now it's done and we don't have to worry about raindrops falling on our heads...inside the house!

On to the Finish Line!!!

Hope this finds everyone well!

I've had a good week, recharged my batteries, and am ready to start the next phase of work on the new e-novel...edits and cleanup! I found one section that needed a little tweaking before beginning the next phase, so I took care of that a couple of days ago. 

So...today I'm going to do some blogging, a little revision to my advertisements for the previous e-books, and preparation for October's Local Author Fair. Starting tomorrow night (AFTER The Big Bang Theory, of course!), I'll start at the first page of the new e-novel and work my way towards the end. A little tweak here...a minor edit there, fix that typo, and so on.

I really want to complete the new e-novel and have it e-published by September 30th. That would mean I'm a month ahead of schedule AND it clears October's schedule. The first weekend in October, we're tearing the shingles and tar paper from our roof. The following Monday, roofers are coming in to put on the new shingles.

October is going to be a busy month on the work front. I have to:
-- Prepare Chapters 2 and 3 for Essentials of Fire Fighting 7th edition and have them ready for Clint to post for the committee. 
-- Finish my edits on Safety Officer 2nd edition.
